Databases are used to store manipulate and retrieve data in nearly every type of organization including business healthcare, education government a nd libraries. Database technology is routinely used by individuals on personal computers by workgroups accessing databases on network servers.
Although the future of databases is assured much work remains to be done many organizations have a proliferation of incompatible databases that were  developed to meet immediate needs rather than based on a planned strategy or a well-managed evolution . new skills are required to design data warehouses and there is a critical shortage of skills in areas as database analysis databases design and data administration.

Basic Concepts
Database: An organized collection of logically related data. A database may be of any size complexity.
Information: Data that have been processed in such a way as to increase the knowledge of person who uses the data.
Data: Facts text graphics images sound and video segments that have meaning in the users  environment .
What is a DBMS?
A Database-management system consists of a collection of interrelated data and a set of programs to access those data. The collection of data usually referred to as the database contains information about one particular enterprise. The primary goal of a DBMS is to provide an environment that is both convenient and efficient to use in retrieving and storing database information Database systems are designed to manage iarge bodies of information the management of data involves both the definiteon of structures for the storge of information and the provision of mechanism for  the manipulation of information.
